Description
Nos 26 and 28 on High Street is a 4-storey corner building with three facades, including a splayed corner bay. No 26 is finished in stucco, while No 28 is constructed of red brick. The building features a slate hipped roof, a cornice, and a parapet. The upper storeys have segmental-headed windows, while the first floor has windows set in round-headed arches. The ground floor is particularly noteworthy, featuring a stone bank front and doorway designed by Frederick Wheeler, with Art Nouveau decoration. This includes segmental-headed windows with deep battered sills and a corner doorway with rounded edges. Above the doorway is an oriel window adorned with delicate carved leaf ornamentation on the corbelling. Bulbous shapes rise from the door and window architraves, tapering into shafts that extend to the heads of the door and windows, traversing an undulating horizontal band before concluding in inverted onion forms at the base of the ground floor cornice. The intricate carving showcases fine detail. The building is still in use as a bank front and is currently occupied by the National Westminster Bank.
