Description
The Sutton War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is located in Manor Park, facing the main Carshalton Road. It features a Latin cross with octagonal cross arms that have carved details at the corners, rising from an octagonal tapering shaft with a carved collar and base. The memorial stands on a plinth with projections or spurs at each corner.
On the front of the shaft, facing Carshalton Road, there is a bronze panel with the inscription: "THIS SIGN/ OF THE GREAT SACRIFICE/ IS RAISED IN HONOUR OF/ OUR HEROIC DEAD/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Each corner spur of the plinth has a carved angel, and between them are the carved emblems of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The sides of the plinth feature recessed stone panels with arched surrounds and twelve bronze panels, three on each side, that list the names of the fallen. Above the steps on the front face is another inscription that reads: "AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE MEN AND WOMEN OF/ SUTTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN DEFENCE OF/ FREEDOM IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945."
Additionally, a panel below states: "THE PEOPLE OF SUTTON/ ERECTED THIS MONUMENT AND DEDICATED/ THE FOUR ACRES OF GROUND SURROUNDING IT/ TO THE USE OF THE PUBLIC FOR EVER. JUNE 1921."
The plinth is set on an octagonal four-stepped base, with the longer side facing the road. It is accessible via four sets of two stone steps.
