Description
This headstone, commemorating an unknown woman, dates from the late 18th century and is located to the north-west of St Nicholas Church. It is made of stone and faces west. The top features an eared segmental arch, with the ears supported by vertically elongated scrolls. The arch frames a relief carving that illustrates the parable of the Good Samaritan, showing the victim lying on the left, the Samaritan kneeling beside him in the center, and the head of a donkey tethered to a tree on the right. Although the relief is worn, it remains legible. The inscription below, which is in a variety of scripts, is mostly illegible, but the words "Wife of [...]" can be discerned above where the subject's name would have been, and the phrase "[...] Children / [Who] all died in their infancy" appears at the bottom. The sides of the headstone feature narrow horizontal reeding, known as corduroy work.
