Description
The tomb of Elizabeth Beacham, dated around 1716, is located a short distance to the west of St Nicholas Church. It is made of stone and features a headstone that faces west. The top of the headstone is designed as a bold cartouche, intricately carved in relief, with volutes on either side framing a skull and crossbones that is turned to the left. The main part of the stone has shouldered edges, with notional capitals supporting the volutes, and a round-arched panel that contains the inscription. The upper portion of the inscription reads: "In Memory of / ELIZBETH BEACHAM / Wife of JOHN BEACHAM / CITIZEN & VINTNER OF LONDON / Who died January [1716 In the] 32 year of her age." The lower part of the text is mostly illegible, although the lettering is well crafted. The reverse side of the headstone is more roughly hewn.
