Description

This is a terrace of 14 houses, built around 1840 in the Italianate style. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with stucco dressings, and have slate roofs with brick chimney stacks. They are three storeys high, with a basement, and each house has 14 windows. A moulded cornice runs along the top of the buildings, and the windows have sash glazing with vertical bars. The first-floor windows are taller, designed as French windows that open onto a continuous tented balcony featuring decorative cast iron railings and column supports.

No. 34 has a slightly raised parapet above the cornice, and more elaborate window surrounds with reeded details and decorative paterae in the corners. Its balcony has coupled colonnettes on either side of the front of the house. The doorcases all have rectangular fanlights, and all except No. 28 retain their original front doors. Most houses retain their original latticed cast iron flower guards below the ground-floor windows, cast iron railings to the steps, and railings in front of the houses.

The interior of No. 38 is exceptionally well preserved, with a staircase featuring stick balusters and a mahogany handrail, marble chimney pieces, ceiling roses, and a 2nd-floor pump with a lead-lined sink. No. 40 has a slightly more elaborate interior, with a staircase featuring turned balusters, more elaborate cornices and ceilings on the ground floor. The interiors of the other houses were not inspected. The terrace first appears in rate books from 1850.
