Description
The Chapel in the Wood, located on Waldegrave Road in Strawberry Hill, was built around 1760 for Horace Walpole. The architect is possibly Bentley, while the roof was designed by Mr. Chute. This polygonal building features a rendered exterior and a slated roof. The carved stone front is inspired by the Audley Tomb at Salisbury and is framed by octagonal corner pilasters and niches. To the left of the entrance is a low panelled door with a three-centred arch and three quatrefoils above. To the right of the door is a small stained glass window, and above it is a large three-light stained glass window. The building has a crocketed parapet adorned with a carved band of grape vine and a central shield. Inside, the chapel boasts attractive blue and gold fan vaulting along with blue and yellow tiles.
