Description

The former Wycliffe Congregational Church, located on Cranbrook Road in Ilford, was built in 1906-7 by the architectural firm of Smee and Houchin. It is an example of Art Nouveau Gothic architecture. The building is constructed of red brick with yellow terracotta detailing. The west front features a wide central gable and a large tripartite window. A short, square tower is situated on the right side, characterised by corner buttresses and a crenellated parapet. The windows are distinguished by characteristic leaded Art Nouveau patterns. From 1970 to 1984, the building served as an amateur theatre, initially named The Cranbrook Theatre and later The Ilford Playhouse, before being converted into offices. In 2016, it was converted into residential use.
