Description

The Former Barclays Bank is a three-storey building dating from the early 20th century, situated on a corner site. The ground level houses the former banking hall, while the upper floors contain offices.

The exterior showcases a pedimented box design in a restrained Classical style, resembling a small palazzo with elements reminiscent of a Grecian temple. The façade facing the High Road features three narrow bays and three storeys of diminishing height, separated by plat bands. The double-height ground floor is marked by two Doric half-columns in antis, with two tiers of windows in embossed metal surrounds between them. The lower windows are round-headed and topped with a small Doric frieze inscribed with "B-A-N-K." The first-floor windows are six-over-nine timber sashes, adorned with simple moulded cornices and aprons. The upper floor contains tripartite windows interspersed with blank raised panels, topped by a triangular pediment. The flat roof behind has a plain stone parapet that is slightly visible on either side. The west elevation facing Clements Road is similar but features broader bays and lacks the half-columns and pediment.

At the rear, there are two extensions: a three-storey neo-Regency addition from the mid-20th century and a single-storey red-brick block from around 1980. These extensions are not of special interest and are excluded from the listing.

Inside, the ground-floor banking hall has been completely stripped of original features. However, the office floors above have seen less alteration, retaining simple timber skirtings, doors, and stairs. A built-in cupboard on the first floor features intersecting 'Gothick' glazing bars.
