Description
The Fountain on the Green at Barnardo's is a Grade II listed fountain from the late 19th century that was restored in 2005. This three-tier bronze fountain features a central shaft from which water flows into three shallow, circular bowls that increase in width. It is situated in the center of a large, shallow, circular stone pool at ground level, which is surrounded by plant beds.
Historic photographs and Ordnance Survey maps show the fountain as part of the site. Originally, the three village greens at the Barnardo's Girls Village Home included fountains, benches, a rose bower, and other garden structures. This green is the only one that remains, along with this single fountain.
The fountain is designated Grade II for its historic interest as the last remaining feature of the Victorian landscaped gardens at the Barnardo's Girls' Village Homes, and for its group value, as it enhances the setting of this significant Victorian cottage home settlement, particularly Cairns Cottage.
