Description
Gothic Lodge is a detached house built around 1760, with additions made around 1880 to 1890 at the rear. The exterior is finished in stucco and features a low-pitched slate roof. The house has two storeys and consists of five bays, with the right side having additional extensions. The entrance, located in the second bay from the left, is designed in a "Gothick" style, featuring a Tudor arched doorway with a cornice above and moulded architraves. The right three bays form a two-storey canted bay window. The ground floor windows are mostly Tudor arched, except for the left bay, which has a later 19th-century canted timber bay window. The upper windows have ogee heads, moulded stucco architraves, and stucco foliated finials, with sashes that include small panes and glazing bars, characteristic of "Gothick" glazing made with crown glass. The rear elevation was remodelled in the late 19th century and includes bay windows. Inside, there is an original staircase with turned balusters and a panelled dado, along with painted glass. A plaque on the facade commemorates the residence of Captain Frederick Marryat, a novelist, who lived there from 1792 to 1848.
