Description
The Church Hall of St Barnabas' Church, built in 1908 by H P Burke-Downing, is a single-storey structure located on Thirsk Road in Mitcham. It features brown brick with red dressings and banding, along with some Portland stone details. The building has a steeply pitched tiled roof that extends to the eaves and is designed in a free neo-Georgian style.
The hall consists of seven bays facing Thirsk Road, with gabled returns at either end. There are entrances in the southern bay and at the rear, both set within projecting pilastered porches topped with hipped roofs and modillion eaves cornices. A low projecting wing is located at the north end of the Thirsk Road elevation, which includes a round-headed dormer. The other windows are square with gauged heads and feature flush framed sashes with 24 panes. A round-headed window is present on the south side.
Buttresses are positioned between the bays, with those at the corners rising through the roof and displaying polychrome banding. The building is topped with a rich modillion eaves cornice and includes a fleche with a cupola and weathervane finial. The same architectural treatment is applied to the returns and the rear of the hall.
