Description
The mausoleum of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette is located 20 yards to the northeast of the chancel of St Mary's Church in the London Borough of Merton. It is a Grade II listed structure, built from Portland stone. The mausoleum features a square rusticated base with an arched entrance, which is flanked by cast iron gates accessed by descending steps. Above this base is a battered block topped with a simple cornice and corner acroteria. Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who died in 1891, was known for designing the main London trunk sewer system and for constructing the Victoria and Albert Embankments during his tenure as chief engineer to the Metropolitan Board of Works from 1866 to 1889.
