Description
This is a white marble table tomb dating to the mid-18th century, situated one foot south of the Grosvenor Tomb within the churchyard of St Mary's. The tomb has rounded ends and carved crests. The sides are panelled, with the centre of each panel slightly projecting and bearing inscribed plaques. The top slab is mounted and rises towards the centre. One plaque, originally on the north side, commemorated Thomas Walker Esquire, who died on 22nd October 1748 at the age of 84. The other plaque, on the south side, details his service as a Customs Commissioner and later as Surveyor General of his Majesty’s Land Revenue, noting his friendship with Sir Robert Walpole and the placement of his portrait at Strawberry Hill. The north plaque is now missing.
