Description
26 and 28 Thames Street are late 17th century or early 18th century buildings that have been altered and are now combined into one shop, previously separate premises. The ground floor features a modern shop front, while the upper floors have been refaced with early 20th century half-timbering, which is of little interest. Each building has its own roof; No 26 has a slated front slope at the eaves, while No 28 has a steeply pitched tiled roof behind a parapet. At the back, facing the churchyard, the buildings remain distinct. No 26 has a plum brick rear wall from the early 18th century or late 17th century, which is one bay wide and features a dentil eaves cornice and a steeply pitched tiled roof with some peg tiles. No 28 extends beyond No 26. The buildings are constructed of brown brick with red dressings and consist of two bays, with the left bay being narrower and containing the door to the ground floor. They are three storeys high and have square-headed sash windows that have been renewed. There are elaborate shouldered relieving arches over the windows and the door on the ground and first floors, featuring strong keystones made of cut brick. The hipped tiled roof connects to the front slope at right angles and has a moulded eaves cornice.
