Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Raphael, located on Portsmouth Road in Kingston-upon-Thames, was built in 1847-48 by Charles Parker, commissioned by Alexander Raphael, MP for St Albans. The church is constructed of ashlar with a pantiled roof. It comprises a three-bay nave with aisles and a lower, shorter chancel. A central, three-stage tower rises to the west, featuring tripled round arches and strong bracketed eaves leading to a pyramidal roof. The tower includes a two-light round-headed window with a Corinthian column between the lights, an oculus above, and a round enclosing arch. The clerestory features triple round-arched and shafted windows. A round-headed entrance is located below the tower. North and south of the main body of the church are two wings, each three bays wide and two storeys high, built of brick with stone dressings and pantiled roofs. The central bay of each wing is taller than the flanking bays. These wings contain two-light round-headed windows to the central bay, with a square-headed two-light window above, all divided by Doric columns. Further round-headed windows are also present on the ground floor. Adjacent bays feature arched doorways with shouldered arches. Low-pitched hipped roofs extend to the eaves.
