Description
The bridge within Osterley Park, built around 1780, is a Grade II listed structure designed as both a bridge and a covered boathouse. It is made of yellow stock brick with Portland stone steps and remnants of a landing jetty. The bridge features a vaulted chamber approximately 12 meters long, connecting an island in the lake to the surrounding lawns, and serves as an embarkation point for boat trips.
At the center of the grassy approach to the bridge, there is a narrow flight of 20 stone steps leading down to the lower chamber, which is simple and has an exposed brick vault. The outer faces of the bridge are also made of exposed brick.
Historically, this unique combination of bridge and boathouse was part of the enhancements made to the grounds of Osterley Park during Robert Child's significant development of the estate. Although Robert Adam was the architect for Child during this period, there is no known connection between him and this structure, which lacks Adam's typical decorative style. Nevertheless, it remains an interesting feature in the landscape, likely serving as the final part of a circuit around the grounds that would have ended with a boat ride to the landing stage on the southern side of the house. Osterley Park is recognized as Grade II* on the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
