Description
The Temple in Gunnersbury Park was built before 1760, likely on the instructions of Princess Amelia during the five years of negotiations leading up to the purchase of the house, as mentioned in a letter of sale. It is constructed of red brick and features a stone tetrastyle Roman Doric portico set on a stylobate of five steps. The columns have square bases, and the entablature includes guttae, triglyphs, and carved metopes. The pediment displays a cartouche and garlands within the tympanum. The wall of the portico has a dado and two semi-circular arched niches that house plaster-cast statues on pedestals. The door surround consists of an architrave, a frieze between consoles, a cornice, and a pediment. Inside, the ceiling is adorned with octagonal caissons, and the building has a Welsh slate roof and cellars. As of December 1968, the temple is in derelict condition.
