Description

The Church of St Michael is a church dating from 1909, designed by W.D. Caröe. It is constructed of red brick with a pitched tiled roof to the eaves. The church is in a Late Gothic style, incorporating strong vernacular elements. The building comprises a three-bay nave, aisles, a lower chancel, transepts, and a spired fleche where the nave and chancel meet. A segmental arched entrance is located within a gabled porch on the north-east side of the transept, flanked by flying brick buttresses. The aisle windows are four-light, with cusped perpendicular tracery set in segmental arched brickwork reveals, with gabled buttresses between bays rising through a low, sweeping roof. Four-light gabled dormers feature in the clerestory. The west end has a large, buttressed niche containing a four-light west window within a segmental arched reveal, with narrow ogeed lights below. The east end has a seven-light perpendicular tracery window in a pointed opening. The interior was not inspected.
