Description

Lady Bankes School is a school building constructed between 1935 and 1936 by architects W T Curtis and H W Burchett. It features a steel frame clad in pale orange brick, accented with beige brick bands and concrete details, and has flat roofs that are not visible. The building has a rectangular plan with a central courtyard and is designed in a modernist style influenced by the work of W M Dudok.

The structure is two stories high and consists of a 12-window range, characterized by continuous concrete lintels and cill bands above iron casement windows set in beige brick surrounds. To the left, there is a two-story stair tower with a concrete lintel and cill band above a tall stair light. To the right, a taller stair tower features a prominent swept lintel over one-light windows and a central door with stepped jambs. This tower also has a tall stair light accentuated by projecting concrete lintels, a plain concrete frieze, a projecting parapet, and an octagonal lantern on the roof.

The building is flanked by similar two-story, five-window ranges and one-story blocks, while the rear elevation is plainer and features slightly projecting blocks that house stairs. The interior is simple, with brick walling.
