Description

Manor house. The building largely dates to the late Medieval period, with alterations and additions from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It is timber framed, with the west wing mostly stuccoed, while the remainder has brick cladding to the ground floor. Two brick additions, dating from the early 18th century, extend to the east. The roofs are steeply pitched and tiled to the eaves. The house is predominantly L-shaped, with a late Medieval west wing, a 16th-century north-south range, the north end of which is jettied on a moulded beam. A 17th-century staircase extension is set within the re-entrant angle between these ranges, to the north-west. A substantial old brick chimney with offsets is also located in this angle. Most windows are 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars, some set under cambered arches.

The west wing, of two bays, has a crown post roof. The western bay shows smoke-blackening above collar level, indicating a possible Medieval hall, open to the roof; a floor was inserted later, with roll-moulded beams likely contemporary with the 16th-century north-south block. The 16th-century north-south block has a queen strut roof and retains many original features, including four-centred arched doorways with decorated spandrels, arched mullioned windows, and moulded beams. A timber-framed, three-storey stair tower contains a circa late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters. The early 18th-century south-east block contains a panelled room with a stone fireplace to the ground floor, a heavy cornice, and an arched recess.
