Description
Great Tomkyns is a 16th and 17th century hall house located on Tomkyns Lane in Upminster. The building features two storeyed jettied wings and a central hall with a single storey front wall. The western part of the front wall is modern, while the eastern part retains an original oak 3-light window and a modern door with a 4-centred head, which originally led to the screens passage. Two internal service doors from this passage remain. The east wing showcases arched braces, a bressumer, and a wall plate, while the later west wing has diagonal braces on the upper floor. The windows throughout are generally made of oak with mullions and transoms, including some older examples, although there is one modern Georgian-style sash window on the ground floor of the west wing. The roof is tiled and hipped towards the front of the wings, with end stacks and an additional stack at the upper west end of the hall. The west elevation is partially rendered.
