Description
The Round House, built around 1792 for William Sheldon, is an oval villa located on Broxhill Road. It features a stucco exterior and a Welsh slate roof with an eaves cornice, culminating in an oval copper parapet. The building has three storeys and eight double-hung sash windows, with three windows on each flatter side and one window on each rounder side. There are first and second floor bands, and four pairs of giant Doric pilasters with entablatures marking the changes in curvature between the flatter and rounder sides. The entrance porch is supported by Doric pilasters and Ionic columns on a stylobate, topped with an entablature. The entrance includes a six-fielded panel two-fold door set in a round-headed reveal, complete with marginal and fanlights. The rounded ends of the building feature first-floor balconies. Inside, one ground floor room is adorned with early 19th-century panoramic wallpaper by Dufour and Cie.
