Description
82-86 High Street is a house with three shops in front, dating from the early 18th century, with the shops added in 1895, designed by Arnold Mitchell. The building is constructed of brick, with the front wall rendered and part of the rear elevation weatherboarded. It features a slate-hung mansard roof and glazed shop fronts with brick-faced pilasters topped with consoles of red sandstone.
The house, which has been subdivided and altered in parts, retains a cellar with large wine vaults and re-used 17th century panelling. There is a panelled room at the rear of the ground floor on the west end, now a restaurant, which includes a reeded Regency fireplace and a box cornice. The staircase features columnar newels and varied turned balusters. Behind the central shop, part of the original front wall with windows is concealed by the later shop front, leading to a panelled passage with moulded arches.
The room at the rear was remodelled in the mid-19th century and retains a polished limestone fireplace. The interiors of the east and west shops (Nos. 82 and 86) have been significantly altered, while No. 84 retains original fittings from its use as a tailor's shop, including extensive shelving for bolts of material, a doorcase, counters with scrolled consoles, and an elaborate wooden ceiling with diamond panels within moulded, dentillated compartments. The central light features decorative leadwork and a ventilation grille. Additionally, the shop front to No. 82 retains an Edward VII wall-mounted post box.
