Description

Nos. 12 to 16 Ballast Quay, originally Union Wharf, form an irregular terrace primarily dating to the early 19th century, although features like cambered window arches and some internal panelling indicate an earlier 18th-century origin. The buildings are each three storeys high and one window wide. They are constructed of multicoloured brick with parapets. The windows are largely restored sash windows with glazing bars; some have gauged, flat brick arches and others have cambered brick arches. Number 12 has some replaced brickwork, likely following war damage. The front door has six panels, with the upper four being glazed, a moulded cornice head, and a patterned radial fanlight, set within a stucco-lined reveal. Number 13 features a French door at first floor level, with margin lights, leading onto a square wooden balcony with trellised sides and a swept hood, supported by curved brackets. The lower part of the balcony is constructed of tongue-and-groove boarding, with two square supporting posts added below. A similar door to Number 12, but the fanlight is blocked. A fire assurance sign is visible at first floor level on the right-hand side. Number 14 has recessed windows inserted under older arches, with stucco-lined reveals. A 19th-century casement window is present on the second floor, above a recessed panel in the parapet. The door resembles that of Number 12, with six panels and glazed upper panels, set within a stucco surround with a gable-shaped peak. Number 15 has a 19th-century casement window on the second floor. The door is similar to that of Number 14. Number 16 has a later sash window on the ground floor, set within an early cambered recess. It features a first-floor balcony and window similar to those on Number 13, and a door resembling those on numbers 14 and 12. The roof, visible from the return, is a V-shaped pantiled roof with a central gully. The listed buildings at Ballast Quay, including Number 18, are considered to form a group.
