Description
The Church of St Aldhelm, built in 1903 by W D Caroë, is located on Silver Street in Edmonton. This building features a nave with low aisles and a chancel with short aisles, all designed in a Gothic style that is uniquely interpreted with influences from the Arts and Crafts movement. It is constructed of red brick, accented with stone dressings and layered tiles, topped with high-pitched tiled roofs. A wood-shingled spire is situated at the crossing, and there is a bell-cote over the west gable. The aisle and chancel windows are set back behind segmental relieving arches, and buttresses define the bays of the structure. The south porch has been converted into a garage. A long window is positioned above the gabled entrance on the west side. Inside, the church features a five-bay nave with a gallery over the west bay. The arcade and gallery piers are adorned with rounded corbel-mouldings, from which arches rise, and similar corbels support the shafts leading to the roof.
