Description
The entrance archway and two lodges, located on either side of the entrance to St Bernard's Hospital, were built around 1839. The monumental arched gateway is constructed of brown brick and stone. Each lodge is a single storey, made of brown brick, featuring pediments on their end projections. The hospital played a significant role in promoting humane treatment for mental conditions starting in 1839 under the leadership of Dr. John Conolly.
