Description
Bedford House and its four associated gate piers date from the late 18th century. The house is located on The Avenue, within the Bedford Park development in London. It is a two-storey building with a slated mansard roof, constructed of yellow brick and stucco, featuring single-storey wings with balustraded bays. The ground floor has round-arched windows. A pediment displays decorative relief work. The eastern half of the house is now hidden behind a modern row of shops, and the east wing has been altered. The north front is no longer of architectural interest. Four contemporary gate piers, constructed from painted stone and exhibiting rustication, accompany the house. The property is listed primarily for its historical significance, representing one of the original Georgian houses preserved within Bedford Park. It was formerly the residence of Dr John Lindley, a horticulturalist, in the early 19th century, and later of Hamilton Fulton, an engineer, in the late 19th century.
