Description
Elis David Almshouse, located on Church Street in Croydon, was originally founded in 1447, with the north range built in 1875 and the parallel south range completed in 1887. The building is positioned at right angles to the street and constructed of red brick with a tiled roof. It is two storeys high. The north range features gable end parapets with brick stacks, a string course between the storeys, six windows, and three blocked window openings, with paired wooden casements under cambered heads. There are three doorways with hoods supported by brackets and a tablet in the gable end. The south range is taller, with a gable end facing the street that has a parapet and a tall stack set to the rear. The front of this range includes a string course and three-light stone mullioned windows. Wrought-iron railings run between the ranges along the street front, with curved lamp brackets over single gates on the left and right.
