Description
The Old Church of St Botolph is a former church that was later converted into a barn. It dates back to the 13th century and was transformed into a barn in the late 18th century, with an oast kiln added in the early 19th century. The building is constructed from flint and stone rubble with stone dressings, featuring a three-brick press on the north side, a weather-boarded cart entrance on the south side, and a pantiled roof.
The west end has a blocked arched west window and a blocked arched doorcase beneath it. The window is surrounded by a smaller red brick frame from the late 18th century and has a casement. There are two buttresses made of flint, brick, and stone. On the south side, there are end buttresses, a central hipped cart entrance from the 18th century, and an arched window with a 20th-century casement. The north side features three brick buttresses and traces of two arched windows that have been filled in, along with an 18th-century brick doorcase. The east end shows the outline of an arched east window, which has been blocked with 18th-century brickwork.
Inside, the church retains a 13th-century arched piscina and double sedilia. The roof structure from the late 18th century includes angled green struts, through purlins, and collar beams. At the northeast end, there is an early 19th-century cylindrical stock brick oast house, which was missing its roof at the time of the survey. It is believed that the building ceased to function as a church in the 16th century.
