Description

Bell Cottage is a house dating from the mid-16th century, with later alterations. It features a rendered exterior over a 16th-century timber frame and has a gabled concrete-tile roof. A 17th-century brick chimney stack is located at the central ridge, while a rendered brick stack from the 18th or 19th century is found at the right end. The house has a two-unit lobby-entry plan, with a former hall on the left side. It stands two storeys high and has a four-window range. The central doorway is blocked and replaced with a 20th-century window. There are flat rendered arches above the 20th-century two-light windows, and segmental-arched 20th-century windows in the outer bays of the ground floor. A 20th-century porch is located to the left.

Inside, the property features stop-chamfered beams with 20th-century joists. The beam on the left is tenoned into the bressumer of a 16th-century smoke bay. To the right, there is an old plank door with strap hinges. The first floor has old elm planks and timber studwork in the gable end walls. A central timber-framed smoke bay contains smoke-blackened wattle and daub infill, along with an inserted 17th-century chimneystack. The roof is a three-bay collar-truss design with clasped purlins and straight wind braces.
