Description

Nos. 5-9 High Street is a house dating from around 1510, known as a continuous jetty house, featuring three bays. It has a chimneystack from around 1650 and was refronted and refenestrated in the early 19th century when number 5 and the right-hand part of number 9 were added. There are also 19th century and later single-storey additions at the rear. The building is timber framed, with the frame including a curved brace exposed in the north wall and a continuous jettied front supported on curved brackets. The infill is rendered, with some parts weatherboarded. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped, with gablets, and is now covered in 20th century machine-made tiles. A brick chimneystack is located at the rear. The house has two storeys and three windows, featuring 19th century casement windows and a shopfront at number 5.

Inside, the frame is primarily made of elm and retains the original crownpost roof structure, much of the original flooring, and braced watt-framing. The only decoration to the frame consists of plain chamfers. A substantial brick chimneystack from around 1650 is located at the rear. The lower part of 17th century panelling survives in the central bay, along with significant late 18th century panelling and a corner china cupboard with a semi-circular head and serpentine shelves in the north bay. There is also a small excavated 18th century cellar at the rear of the north bay.
