Description

The St Mary Cray War Memorial is a Portland stone wheel-headed cross raised on a tall shaft, which stands atop a slightly trapezoidal plinth. The front face originally featured an inscription that has since eroded and is illegible. It reportedly read: THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 / TO THE GREAT AND IMPERISHABLE MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE LASTING / WELFARE OF THEIR COUNTRY / LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS: / WE LIFT THEM UP UNTO THE LORD. A metal plaque now covers this inscription, bearing the words: THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED TO / THE MEMORY OF OFFICERS AND MEN / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918 / (THEIR NAMES ARE COMMEMORATED / IN FULL INSIDE THE CHURCH). The plinth sits upon a stone platform.
