Description

The Church of St Peter le Poer was built between 1908 and 1909, designed by W.D. Caröe. It is constructed of red brick with English bond, tile arches laid on their edge, and stone dressings, with a plain tile roof. The church comprises a five-bay aisled nave with a basement at the west end and a south porch; a south transept; a two-bay chancel with a one-bay Lady Chapel to the south and a vestry to the north; and a gabled west tower. A chamfered plinth runs around the base. Windows feature stone tracery with cusped lights and leaded glazing with iron stanchions and saddle bars.

The nave has blind four-light chamfered mullion windows in the west bays, with tile offsets marking the buttresses between bays and below the two-light windows, which are set within segmental-arched recesses. The porch at the east end has corner buttresses and a segmental archway with a recessed entrance, splayed reveals, and a nail-studded panelled double door beneath a peaked gable. The north aisle is similarly buttressed and has three-light windows. At the west end of the aisles, doorways are present, with a window above, that to the north aisle being blocked. The transept has a three-light window with Perpendicular-style tracery.

The chancel has a buttress between the transept and the Lady Chapel, which has a three-light window and a canted east end, corbelled below the gable and featuring a two-light window. The chancel east window is of seven lights, triangular headed, with a foundation stone set below. A peaked-gabled porch with nail-studded, panelled doors is on the north side.

The three-storey tower has end and broad central buttresses, the latter featuring a one-light and a two-light window. Segmental arched openings to the two lower storeys have a bricked-up window and a two-light window to the lower storey. These are offset below the next storey, which has two 2x6-light windows, the central lights being blind and constructed of stone. A modillion band sits below the upper storey, which has a blind pointed-arched arcade with interlocked arches and capitals to the piers. The tile-hung gable has a wooden belfry opening with two cusped, louvered lights, topped by a slender ridge spire with weathervane. The east gable is similarly detailed. The south side of the tower has a pent porch with a one-light window above, and a belfry dormer mirroring the design. A similar dormer is present on the north side.

The interior of the nave features pointed-arched stone arcades, a gallery at the west end supported by stone columns, and a pointed-arched boarded vault with moulded ribs. The chancel has a masonry vault. A panelled pulpit, dating from the 18th century, comes from the former Church of St Peter le Poer, Broad Street, in the City of London (built 1788-1792, and subsequently demolished in 1908).
