Description
Mill Hill School, built around 1825 by Sir William Tite, features a long two-storey range constructed of grey brick with stone dressings. The street front consists of three bays, with the ends and center set forward. The ground floor has round-headed windows, and the centerpiece includes a stone pediment with full-height coupled pilasters. The windows and door are framed with eared surrounds. The main front showcases a hexastyle pedimented Ionic portico on the opposite side. This building was originally constructed for the Congregational College, which was founded in 1807 on the site of Peter Collinson's famous botanic garden, who died in 1768. An assembly hall was added in 1905 by T E Collcutt, whose wing is in a free classical style, made of stucco with stone dressings and featuring a hipped, slated roof. There are low additions to the building that are not of significant interest.
