Description

The Royal Air Force Officers Mess, originally known as the London Aerodrome Hotel, was built in 1917. It features a brick structure with roughcast and timber cladding. The front range has a hipped tiled roof, while the red service range has a slated roof. The building has an irregular layout designed in a mock Tudor style, comprising ten main bays and standing two storeys tall with dormers. The end bays on the right and left are gabled, with the right bay being advanced and the left bay recessed. There are segmental arched entrances to the gabled bays. The ground floor is recessed to the left of the central range, with a wide bay window to the right of the centre. The windows are casement style, featuring timber mullions and transoms on the taller ground floor windows, reflecting the presence of the main entertainment suite. The dormers are flat-topped and vary in width, with three featuring gables. Inside, the building retains its original entrance and staircase hall in the right bay, along with an entertainment suite in the front range that includes stone fireplaces and neo-Tudor timberwork. This building holds significant historical importance due to its central role in Graham White's enterprise.
