Description
Hawthorne Dene is a building dating from around 1825-1826, constructed by builders James Frost. Originally a double cottage, it has been converted into a single residence. The building is two stories tall with a basement and features one window with a two-window return. It has a slate hipped roof with projecting boxed out eaves and is made of multi-coloured stock brick. The windows are recessed sash types, framed by stucco architraves and glazing bars. The entrance includes a round arched doorway with an architrave, a radial fanlight, a panelled door, and an added wooden porch. Access to the entrance is via steps that are flanked by cast iron railings. At the rear, the former cottage entrance has been modified for use as splayed bay windows, with railings and steps similar to the front entrance. Inside, there are notable features such as vaulted, pilastered tile ceilings supported by cast iron ribs, decorated with fluted patterns. Additionally, there is one surviving dogleg staircase with stair treads and cast iron fretwork balustrades.
