Description
Valence House is a 17th-century building, though parts may date back earlier. It has been situated on a moated site since at least the 13th century. The house is L-shaped and has two storeys, featuring a timber frame with plaster that is colourwashed. The left wing has three windows, while the right wing has four. The windows include various 19th-century casements and 18th- and 19th-century sashes. There are two old gabled dormers on the left block, each with three-light windows and cornices. The roofs are covered with old tiles, and the right wing has a slightly taller section with a steeply pitched hipped tile roof. There is a further extension to the right, built around 1920, which follows a similar style but has a flat roof. The other elevations maintain a similar character with various windows.
Inside, there is a notable painted panelled room on the ground floor at the eastern end of the old part of the house. The panels are small and feature raised mitred mouldings, likely from the early 17th century. The fireplace in this room has a late Stuart marble surround with a bolection-moulded panel above it. The well staircase dates from the late 17th century and includes turned balusters. Additionally, there is another oak panelled room on the first floor. In the 14th century, the property belonged to Aymer de Valence and his sister.
