TQ 3080 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER WILLIAM IV STREET, WC2 72/158 Western Corner Block of Former Charing Cross 29.4.87 Hospital G.V. II Former hospital. 1831 built as the Opthalmic Hospital and part of Nash's West Strand Improvements, probably executed by William Herbert, mid to later C19 alterations, stucco, slate roof. Very restrained Grecian detailing. 3 storeys, attic storey and dormered mansard. 5 windows wide with 3 window return splayed across corner of junction with Chandos Street. Central Greek Doric portico. Recessed sashes, some with glazing bars in shallow architraves. Main entablature over 2nd floor, cornice and blocking course to attic. West return has ground and first floors built out with glazed in Pilastered 1st floor loggia. Absorbed as part of former Charing Cross Hospital late C19. Survey of London; Vol XX
