Description
Nos 20 to 22 Suffolk Street are terraced houses built around 1822-23 as part of the Suffolk Street-Suffolk Place development, which was associated with the architect John Nash, although these specific houses may not have been designed by him. The buildings are constructed of stucco and topped with a slate roof, featuring three storeys plus an attic and basements. Each house has a front that is two windows wide, with incised coursing.
The ground floors have doorways on the right for Nos 21 and 22, and on the left for No 20, all featuring recessed four-panel doors with rectangular fanlights. No 20 has pilaster jambs. The tripartite ground floor windows are recessed glazing bar sash windows, adorned with blind segmental arched tympana. The first and second floors have architraved and corniced glazing bar sash windows, with the first-floor windows flanked by panelled strips and supported by consoles under the cornices. The attic features plain square windows.
A continuous course-balcony on the first floor showcases diamond and star pattern ironwork, while a main dentil cornice is present above the second floor, along with a cornice and blocking course at the attic level. The area is enclosed by cast iron crescent and spear head railings. This building is an important example of street architecture in the style of Nash's Regent Street, reflecting his significant investment in the development.
