Description

Nos. 2 to 6 Chandos Street are terraced town houses built around 1770-1780 as part of the Portland Estate development. The houses are primarily constructed of stock brick, with No. 6 being stuccoed, and feature a rusticated stucco ground floor. They have tiled roofs and are arranged in pairs, with recessed links between some of them. The buildings rise four storeys with dormered mansards and basements, and each has a three-window wide front with one window links.

The doorways, which are adjacent in each pair, are wide and semicircular arched. Nos. 2 and 3 have mid-19th century pedestalled pilaster frames that support archivolts with keystones. Nos. 5 and 6 display vermiculated rustication and voussoirs; No. 5 features a panelled door set back for one order with a radial loop patterned fanlight, while No. 6 has a flush panelled door flanked by engaged Doric columns, supporting a projecting doorhead and a plain fanlight. Nos. 2 to 4 have panelled doors with pilaster jambs, sidelights, moulded doorheads, and inscribed fanlights.

Around 1900, tripartite ground floor windows were added to Nos. 2 and 3, framed with architraves and cornices. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged red brick arches with stucco reveals. A plat band finishes the stucco work at the first floor level, while Nos. 5 and 6 have a brick plat band above the first floor. The main cornice over the second floor features a stone cyma capping, and the parapets have stone copings.

There are early to mid-19th century continuous first floor balconies supported by stucco consoles or cast iron brackets, adorned with ornate cast iron scroll or geometric pattern rails. The area railings are made of cast iron and topped with flambé vase finials. Nos. 3 and 5 and 6 have lamp standards flanking paired flights of steps. The interiors have not been inspected.
