Description

The buildings at 1-8 Dorset Square form the east side of the square. These are terraced town houses dating to approximately 1815-1820, part of the Portman Estate development. They are constructed of stock brick with stucco ground floors, with most of the ground floor areas banded. The roofs are concealed behind slate. The building presents a symmetrical facade, with Nos. 4 and 5 slightly projected. The buildings are four storeys high with a basement. Each front is three windows wide, except for No. 1, which has four, and the central pair, which have two windows each. Doorways are symmetrically placed, each featuring a semicircular arch with a panelled door, flanked by Greek Doric columns in antis supporting Greek key decorated doorheads, topped with patterned fanlights (except for Nos. 6, 7 and 8). The upper floors have recessed sash windows, some with glazing bars, set within flat, gauged arches. The windows of the central pair have stuccoed flat arches and keyblocks. A plat band runs above the ground floor, topped by a stucco cornice and blocking course. Cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern are present across the first floor, and at Nos. 1, 2 and 8, alongside standard verandahs featuring tent roofs. Cast iron area railings with urn finials complete the exterior.
