Description

Nos 250 to 270 on Regent Street is a block of offices and shops that forms part of the southeast quadrant of Oxford Circus. Designed by Sir Henry Tanner in 1912 and completed in 1913, the building features Portland stone cladding, a steel frame, and a slate roof. It is designed in a classical style with Beaux Arts details and is part of a symmetrical arrangement with the other three blocks surrounding the circus.

The structure consists of four tall storeys and double attics, topped with steep mansards and pavilion roofs. The upper floors, including the returns, are arranged with projecting pavilions flanking the long southern range and the quadrant. The windows are grouped in a specific sequence from the south end of the block: three windows, a splayed corner, one window, three windows, twenty-nine windows, three windows, three windows to the quadrant, and three windows to Oxford Street.

The ground floor shop fronts are defined by pilasters featuring wreathed shields topped with cherub heads. The upper floors have architraved bronze casements, with those on the second floor adorned with alternating pediments. The pavilions are accentuated by a giant order of Ionic columns and pilasters, enriched aprons, and bronze balconies at the center windows. Central stone dormers rise into the attic with open pediments, and a similar dormer design is applied to the central three bays of the long southern range.

The quadrant is distinguished by giant Ionic columns that separate tripartite bronze pilastered and framed windows. Below the attic, there is a main entablature with a balustraded parapet. Additional features include corniced dormers, stone chimney stacks, and roof ridges embellished with bronze crestings and triumphal ornaments.
