Description
No 1 Albert Gate is a mansion, now serving as an embassy, built in the mid-19th century. It features painted stucco in an Italianate style. The main block has five storeys and is three windows wide facing Albert Gate, with three windows on the returns and a four-window, three-storey wing at the rear. The ground floor has rustication. The central entrance is framed by a Doric porch with paired columns. The windows are square-headed, with pediments on the first floor and flanking Corinthian half columns. The upper windows have architraves, and most are sashed with small panes. There are balconies on the first and second floors, and the building has a cornice that pairs with a glazed mansard. It also features a balustraded area. This building is one of a pair with No 2 Albert Gate.
