Description
31 Sackville Street is a terrace house built around 1732. It features a brown brick exterior and a slate roof, rising three storeys with a basement and a dormered mansard. The house is five windows wide and has a square, piers stucco porch with an entablature, positioned off-centre to the left. The recessed sash windows, which do not have glazing bars, are set under flat gauged arches and have similar dressings. There is a plat band on the first floor and a moulded stone cornice below the parapet, which has coping. The cast iron area railings date from the 19th century. Inside, the house has undergone some alterations in the early and mid-19th century but still retains significant original features, including panelling and doorcases. The front compartment has an open string staircase with deeply carved brackets at the ends of the treads, although the balustrade appears to be an early 19th-century modification.
