Description

This is a long terrace block located at 1-33 York Terrace West, built around 1821-1826 by the architect John Nash as part of his Regent's Park Crown Estate development. The building has been rebuilt behind its facades and the east end in a facsimile style. It features stucco exterior and slate roofs. The design presents a balanced "palace" block composition, similar to York Terrace East, and is adorned with the same Illissian Ionic giant order as seen at York Gate. The illusion of a palace facing the park is maintained by placing the entrances at the rear.

The terrace consists of four storeys, including an attic storey. A central pedimented hexastyle pavilion is flanked by plain brick ranges with 15 windows above a Doric colonnaded loggia. This loggia terminates in projecting five-window pavilions that feature an Ionic order in antis. The channelled ground floors of the pavilions have semicircular arched windows that are recessed for one order. A Greek Doric colonnaded loggia with a balustraded balcony parapet screens the ground floor windows of the brick ranges, and the balustraded parapet extends over the pavilions.

The upper floors have plain recessed sash windows. The central pavilion includes angle pilasters flanking the bays of the hexastyle portico, while the giant order in antis on the end pavilions creates a two-storey loggia in front of the windows. There is a continuous entablature above the second floor, and the attic windows of the pavilions feature semicircular arched windows set between pilaster strips. A continuous attic cornice and blocking course complete the design.

The York Gate return has a giant porch feature with a semicircular arched doorway set in a pedimented surround, which was originally a gatekeeper's lodge. The rear elevation has been entirely rebuilt.
