Description
A row of terraced houses at 4 to 18 Eccleston Square, dating from the 1840s to 1850s. The houses are constructed of stucco, with roofs hidden from view. They stand four storeys high, with numbers 14 to 18 rising to five storeys, and some dormers are present. Each house is two windows wide. The ground floors are rusticated, and the houses feature square-headed entrances; those at numbers 8 and 11 to 13 have projecting Doric porches, while numbers 14 to 18 have a Doric colonnade along the ground floor. Triglyph friezes run along the ground floor. The entrances have panelled and studded doors. A continuous balustraded balcony runs along the first floor. The windows are square headed, with architraves above the ground floor and cornices to the first floor, and pediments above the windows of numbers 4, 5, 9, and 10. The windows are primarily sash windows, some with glazing bars, and the first floor windows are French casements. A modillion cornice sits above the third floor, and above the fourth floor of numbers 14 to 18. Cast iron area railings are present. These houses were part of the layout of Eccleston Square, planned by Thomas Cubitt from 1835.
