Description
Nos. 14 to 22 Park Street, including No. 68 Mount Street, are terraced townhouses built in 1896-97 by Balfour and Turner. The buildings are constructed of red brick with flush stone quoining, string cornices, and window dressings, topped with slate roofs. They exhibit a restrained Queen Anne style combined with Free Style Jacobethan elements. The houses rise three storeys and have a basement, with a sheer attic storey or gabled attics. Each house has a front that is two windows wide, with long return elevations at No. 14 and No. 68 Mount Street.
The entrances feature Tudor arched recessed porches arranged in pairs, while the end houses have entrances in their return elevations. The design includes square and canted bay windows with glazing bar sash lights between mullions, extending from the basement to the first floors. A boldly bracketed main cornice supports a tall attic floor, which is capped with a plain parapet coping. The design is enhanced by two triangular gables with shallow oriels. The corners at Aldford Street and Mount Street feature diagonally set square bay windows with two sash lights, topped with leaded domical roofs. The return elevations display similar architectural details. The buildings also have prominent chimney stacks and cast iron area railings. This development is part of Balfour and Turner's improvements to the Grosvenor Estate.
