Description

This is a unified terrace block located at 1-43 Clarence Terrace, NW1, part of the Regent’s Park Crown Estate development. The terrace was built in 1823 by Decimus Burton, under the supervision of John Nash, and constructed by James Burton. It was completely reconstructed in 1965. The building is stucco with slate roofs and is designed in a Graeco-Roman palace style, characteristic of Nash’s architectural approach.

The terrace consists of three blocks, with a hexastyle portico at the centre of the main range. Lower links are set back behind colonnade screens, and flanking pavilions are more advanced with a pilaster order. The building is three storeys high with dormered mansards. The main range is 15 windows wide, the links are 3 windows wide, and the flanking pavilions have 3-window fronts with 5-window returns.

Features include enclosed, pilastered porches to the inner returns of the flank pavilions. Doorways are behind screens in the links and within the main portico, which sits on a podium. The ground floor features channelled stucco, semicircular arched windows, and segmental arched openings in the screens. The first-floor windows are architraved and corniced. The hexastyle portico is distinguished by a giant Corinthian order, with a broken entablature and a shallow pediment. The colonnade screens feature giant paired Ionic columns supporting an entablature. The flanking pavilions are characterized by first and second floors dressed with giant Corinthian pilasters. A balustraded parapet tops the main range, featuring a geometric patterned first-floor balcony and balconettes to the links. Tasselled spearhead area railings are also present.
