Description

No 170 Queen's Gate is a mansion built in 1888 by architect Richard Norman Shaw, showcasing a Wren revival style. The building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped tiled roof that extends to the eaves. The main facade faces Imperial Institute Road and is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, spanning seven bays in an almost symmetrical arrangement.

The exterior includes rusticated quoins made of painted stone and a central entrance highlighted by a richly carved stone doorcase, which is flanked by Corinthian fluted pilasters and topped with a split segmental pediment. Above the entrance is a decorative fanlight and a panelled door. The windows are adorned with cut brick gauged heads and aprons, featuring sashes with small panes and timber glazing bars, along with timber louvred shutters. A rich modillion cornice crowns the building, while a central curved dormer with a Serlian motif is set into the roof. There are also two casemented corners with segmental pediments on either side. The building has tall chimney stacks and a single-storey, three-bay extension to the right, which includes arched windows. The returns of the building are also noted for their interest. The interior has not been seen.
