Description
The drinking fountain, located southeast of the Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, was built in 1869 and designed by Robert Keirle, who was the architect for The Metropolitan Free Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association. It was commissioned by Sir Cowasjee Jehangir and is made of white Sicilian marble and pink and grey Aberdeen granite.
The fountain features a Gothic design set on an octagonal base with two steps. It has a rectangular plinth with large D-shaped faceted basins supported by paired colonnettes on each face, and each face is flanked by rectangular standing blocks intended for children. The rectangular fountain is adorned with paired colonnettes at the corners that support a star-enriched frieze and a gabled spire topped with small pinnacles. The three gabled faces are decorated with carved busts of the donor, the Prince Consort, and Queen Victoria, while the fourth face once displayed a clock. Each side features an enriched pointed arch on half-length pilasters that flank the water spout, which is set in geometrically patterned carved marble.
Historically, the fountain is known as the Parsee fountain, named after its benefactor. It was presented as a gesture of gratitude to the people of England for the protection afforded to him and his countrymen under British rule in India. The fountain cost £1,400 and was inaugurated by Princess Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck.
